• Where:  town of Livingston, in southwest Columbia County, NY.

• 13 miles, gentle-to-moderate hilliness (650 vertical feet, hill index 2.4).

21 miles, gentle-to-moderate hilliness (950 vertical feet, hill index 2.6), if Variation C is taken.  

24 miles if all of Variations A, B, C are taken.

• Highlights:  An immersion in quiet farm country, with sweeping views of fields and orchards and the Catskill mountains in the distance.  Our favorite gentle-to-moderate ride.   

• Characteristics:  Mostly on quiet roads, with a couple of moderate climbs.

Problem with bridge:  For several years the bridge over the creek near the west end of Wire Rd has been closed to vehicles because of need for repairs. As of August 2006 this bridge is uncrossable with a bicycle -- see discussion on the Reports page.

• warning:  roads change -- but we have not checked much of the main route since the date below.

And it might have been a longer time since some of the Variations of the route were last checked by us.  Some roads and intersections might be different since then, or closed -- so be prepared to find alternatives -- a good reason to carry a detailed map. • Directions to Start: 

By train:  This route can be reached from the Amtrak station in Hudson, NY, but this makes it much longer and adds more hills.  Start North on Front St, turn R on Columbia St, continue until reach Rt 23B, east of the city of Hudson.  R on Newman Rd (which goes up a significant hill, then passes an interesting quarry), R on Fingar Rd, R on Rt 23 West, L on CC Rt 31, and turn R on CC Rt 14 to join Variation C of the route.  To return on different roads to the railroad station, follow the Grand Tour of Columbia County route.

By car:  

From the Taconic State Parkway, at West Taghkanic exit to Route 82, go West 0.8 mile, then turn Left onto Livingston Rd about 3.2 miles to the its intersection with Columbia County Route 19 at the center of Livingston.

From Route 9, turn East onto Columbia County Route 10 (Church Rd) and go about 0.1 mile to the center of Livingston. 

Note:  There is not much parking by the center of Livingston.
