Subways

Taking a bicycle with you on the subway can be a very useful way to get around in New York City.

Bicycle Rules -- As of October 2000, our understanding is that bicycles are permitted, but not during morning and afternoon-evening rush hours on weekdays, and there are some other restrictions.  See the PATH website for details. 

Buses

Bicycle Rules -- As of October 2000, our understanding is that bicycles are permitted on some buses, subject to some restrictions.  It's complicated, since there are many companies who operate buses in, out, and around New York City.

Ferries

  • Staten Island Ferry : 718-815-2628 -- ferry boat route between south Manhattan and Staten Island.  As of June 2002, bikes permitted with no charge -- enter boat through the car lane.  

As of June 2002, ferry goes only once every hour on weekend mornings, so check the current schedule if you don't want to have to wait 55 minutes for the next one. 

Used on the New York Harbor Circle route [ Photos ] 

  • NY Waterway : 800-533-3779 -- several ferry boat routes between New Jersey and Manhattan. 

Could be used to create shorter variations or contingency plans for the New York Harbor Circle route -- but check in advance for current schedules and for current rules or restrictions about bicycles.
