To stay close to the Hudson River:  continue on Rt 9 North, then L on Rt 9J North, and rejoin the main route at the Dunn Memorial Bridge crossing in Albany. But you do not actually get to see much of the Hudson river, and we have found this much less interesting than the main route.

follow Bike Routes 5 and 9 on sidewalk, first north up ramp, west across bridge over Hudson River -- Dunn Memorial Bridge -- then north down a ramp steeply into a tricky intersection where the sidewalk does not have right-of-way -- so a stop is required immediately at the bottom. Sign says that bicycles must be walked down the ramp. [ as of October 2005]

  to see some New York State office buildings and Empire State Plaza + get some food -- with a hill-climb and city traffic, though traffic is often not heavy on weekends:  One route is: R (North) on Broadway, L on State St (up hill), BR becomes Washington St (west), L on Lark St (several food places), L on State St (east), down to Empire State Plaza on Right side in midst of downhill. Then continue East down hill, and at traffic light turn R on Pearl St (South) to rejoin main route. (or continue further East down to Broadway to Variation G)

  to visit Port of Albany -- flat roads usually with less traffic on weekends -- but with lots of railroad crossings, some with tracks at angles that need care to avoid bicycle falling: continue straight south on Broadway (follow signs for "Port of Albany") [HH], curves left, goes underneath I-787 highway. T - R Broadway (south), T - L on Church St (south), various turns and curves but continuing mainly south, R on Port St (west), EE - L on Rt 32 South to rejoin main route.
