Ferry
boat

Staten Island Ferry.  Check Staten Island Ferry link or 718-815-2628.  Get on the ferry, and let the boat take you and your bicycle from Staten Island to Manhattan island.

North

West on sidewalks

0.3

as you emerge into daylight, bear Left (West), then work your way generally West and North on paths through Battery Park, following signs for Manhattan Greenway. You may be required to walk your bike. The objective is to get to the northwest corner of the Park, at the intersection of Battery Place and West St.

36.2

Variation

Some riders with strong skills in handling urban traffic and its special risks may try to ride north through Manhattan below 72nd St on the streets.  A possible reason to do this is to avoid the West side Esplanade and Greenway path at times of heavy use.  For some ideas about this, see Traffic and Trip Reports

36.5

West on sidewalk

0.2

Go west on the sidewalk on the south side of Battery Place street. When the street curves north, bear Left to leave the street and continue straight, aiming toward the tallest building on the other side of the River. The objective is to get to the water on the west side of the south end of the island.

36.6

Variation

for less pedestrian traffic, but more street crossings, and miss some waterfront views and spaces:  the Greenway path soon turns North inland along the west side of West St. To get on it must go west of West St and cross Battery Place street. So where Battery Place curves north, the Greenway path runs in between West St and Battery Place street. [last checked June 2005]

Variation

To continue on a path mostly off-road with pleasant views -- but likely at a slower pace, it is possible to continue North on the West side Path.  This has some challenges -- see the West side Path route pages for ideas on how to get to GWB to rejoin the main route.
