Fahnestock Winter Park

Ski, snowshoe, and sled close
to home with family and friends

Fahnestock Winter Park

  • Skiing -- Glide through meadows and forests on 15 kilometers (9 miles) of trails -- machine groomed for ski skating and tracked for classic skiing. [ Trail Map | Conditions | Photos | Names of trails ]
  • Snowshoeing -- Explore mapped trails that wind by lakes, streams, stone walls and granite outcroppings.
  • Inner tube sledding -- Slide down a small hill on a specially designed tube and bring back childhood memories.
  • Warming Lodge -- Relax in our cozy Acorn Cafe or warm yourself at our outside wood fireplace. Food, beverages, restrooms and changing facilities are available.
  • Equipment - Ski Accessories - Lessons : Quality sledding tubes, baby sleds, snowshoes, skis (both classic and skate), boots and poles are available on a first come, first served basis. Lessons are geared to the beginner, but advanced instruction is provided. XC ski accessories are available too. [ Rates ]
  • We have snow when other southern locations might not -- snow coverage in the lower Hudson Valley can vary with location and elevation. With an elevation of 1,100 feet, we capture additional snow during storms. A forested northwest trail system allows us to maintain a good snow base.
  • Weather -- Storms and unseasonal temperatures affect our operating schedules. During warm spells we sometimes close for a few days to let the warm front pass by. When the snow surface is softened by these conditions it is easy to damage the trails. Please, do not ski or snowshoe on them when they are closed. After storms, on many occcassions, we delay opening to ensure that our staff arrive safely. Once this occurs, we tackle our grooming and plowing tasks. Please call before traveling. [ Conditions ]
  • On the trails -- A trail pass is required to ski and snowshoe on FWP's designated trails. While enjoying them, please stay in control while skiing. When stopping, do not obstruct the trail and make sure you are visible from above. People ahead of you have the right of way. If a hill is too steep for your ability or you are too tired to ski back to the lodge, walk to the farthest right edge of the trails as possible.  If snowshoeing, please keep skiers in mind; they have less maneuverability, especially on downhills. Depending on conditions, not all the trails may be open. Observe posted signs, and remember that you might meet a groomer on the trails at any time.
  • An easy drive -- Conveniently located in Putnam County near Cold Spring, NY. One hour drive from New York City, Poughkeepsie, Middletown, and Danbury CT. Accessible by Metro North trains from NYC [ How to get here ]

Skiing, Snowshoeing & Sledding

Discover the beauty of Fahnestock Memorial State Park this winter.  Come ski through Hemlock and hardwood forests on our 15km trail system.  Lakes, streams, stone walls and granite outcroppings provide a picturesque setting for outdoor recreation.

Choose your own pace

The diverse terrain of the Park appeals to both beginner and expert skiers [ see Trail Map ].  Non-skiers can enjoy the trails on snowshoes or give snow tubing a try on our sledding hill.

Families find the Park particularly enjoyable because it offers lots of open and easy terrain for children and beginners.  The small sledding hill nicely complements day-long trips.

Wilderness trails are accessible from the park.  Since they are not groomed or maintained, they are used by skiers or snowshoers interested in exploring the woods on their own.

For reports on snow and trail conditions, see links and info above.

It begins on the first stride

Learning to cross country ski on groomed trails is easier and more enjoyable for the beginner.

To accomplish this goal, we have selected quality ski, snowshoe and inner tube rentals.  We stock a variety of skis -- both classic and skate -- boots, and poles to fit most everyone.

Lessons are geared for the first time skier.  Our beginner group lessons review equipment, cover basic motions and skills of skiing on level terrain, stopping, falling and getting up.  For those comfortable on skis, but who want to learn more, advanced lessons are available.

Where to stay

Choose from a variety of lodging options -- see Lodging + Food.  Motels, hotels and bed & breakfasts are close by.  Clubs looking for more rustic experience can find cabin accommodations with hearty meals located in the park.
